Marriage License

Marriage is an important event in a couple’s life and is also a form of legal contract. Although planning for your Special Day will be exciting, do not forget some important details like obtaining a marriage licence or updating your identification if you change your name.The marriage licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months from the date of purchase.

 

The Application Form

 
Download Marriage License Application Form PDF , or pick one at any Registry services office at any City Hall in Ontario. The marriage application form must be completed and signed by both applicants.   

Identification


Any one of the following identity documents must be presented for each person. Identity documents must be original; photocopies will not be accepted.   

  • Birth certificate 
  • Valid Passport 
  • Valid Driver’s licence 
  • Canadian citizenship card 
  • Canadian Government refugee travel document 
  • Conditional release identification card 
  • United States green card 
  • Native status card 
  • Record of immigration landing 
  • Citizenship card from any country 

 

Age requirements


Both partners must be 18 years of age or older. If you are 16 or 17 years of age, parental consent is required. Please contact the Registry Services Office at your local City Hall for further information. If you are under the age of 16 years you may not marry in the Province of Ontario.

Immediately after the marriage ceremony, the couple may receive a Record of Solemnization of Marriage from the person who performed the ceremony.    

This document includes the couple’s names, the date of the marriage, the names of the witnesses and whether the marriage was performed under the authority of a licence or the publication of banns. This is not a marriage certificate or a legal record.  The person who performed the marriage must forward the completed and signed marriage licence to the Office of the Registrar General for registration.    

 Note:  The marriage must be registered before you may apply for a marriage certificate.  ( Apply 12 weeks after the ceremony)
